Noah’s Ark Society is actively recruiting for volunteers to join the team.  Please write us to learn more.  We are detailing some current opportunities below, but there are a TON of ways to get involved that take anywhere from 1 hour a month to 10 hours a week.

1) Preventatives Coordinator – keep track of medical supplies, supplements and preventatives (flea/tick and heartworm), and mail preventatives to foster homes on the first of each month for the dogs in their care.

2) Home Visit Volunteers – Visit applicants in their homes to help with the adoption process.  We provide the training, you get to meet great like  minded individuals who love animals, and want to give one a home!

3) Reference Checkers – Volunteer from your couch or office!  Reference checkers just need to make phone calls to vet and personal references and the occasional landlord to make sure that the animals in our care are going to great people who will love them for life!

4) Volunteer Coordinator – This is a higher time role, but someone we really need.  If you are really detail oriented, have great communication and computer skills, we need you!  You will help communicate the mission of Noah’s Ark Society to new volunteers, recruit volunteers for special events, and make sure that everyone who wants to be part of the Noah’s Ark Society team is in the role that is right for them.

This is just a sampling of current volunteer opportunities, but there are more where that came from!  Please write us at noah@noahsarksociety.org if you want to join the team.

We first became aware of Grace on Sunday September 23, 2012. Her picture was sent to us via Facebook. Our first thought was “how is this dog still alive?”. Grace was skeleton with fur. She is so emaciated you can’t even tell what breed she is–hound, boxer and terrier are all current guesses.

We spent two days pleading with the animal control facility to release her to us rather than euthanizing her, and finally were told we could have her—if we were at the shelter at 11am on Tuesday, September 25th. No questions asked, Lori and Sariah cleared their schedules, planned the trip to Jackson, and were there at 11 on the dot to get little Grace.

This is the first photo we received of Grace:

When we got to the shelter, we were told 6 dogs were being euthanized that day, so we sorted out how to maximize the space in our Hyundai Elantra, and managed to bring 3 additional dogs with us for the drive back to Nashville. The photo below is the last photo we took of Grace in the shelter. The black marks on her are all flies:

Too weak to stand, Whitney, an ACO carried her to our car, where we nested her in blankets on the floor where she could have a close watch kept over her for the drive to Nashville.

We finally made it to the vet. Grace’s prognosis is very guarded. She is at 20% hydration and her red blood cell levels are off to the point that is seems like a luekemia like reaction. Her body weight is about 30% of what her true weight should be. She also has a broken foot, and her teeth are worn to non-existence.

Grace will be inpatient for an estimated 14 days—possibly longer to maximize her stability before she goes to a foster home to continue her remaining rehab. With x-rays, repeat blood values, fluids, and medications to stabilize her we are estimating an approximate $5,000 vet bill. Donations of any size are so greatly appreciated to help Grace on her way back to health.  To Chip In, please go to this link: Chip In For Grace , or call South Franklin Animal Hospital at 615-595-2337 and donate by credit card.  Just tell them you are calling to support Grace.

During Operation Freedom, Noah’s Ark Society brought a family of bunnies onto the Ark.  Momma bunny is a pure bred Angora.  Daddy is an American, and the babies are the cute fuzzy mix of both.  They have been growing like weeks since being in rescue, and the little ones are now officially teenagers.

We have had a generous volunteer come forward who has offered to donate to offset a portion of the adoption fee for the rabbits, so the adoption fee is only $10 per bunny!!!   If you have kids that want to snuggle a ball of fuzz, live in a small home or apartment and want a friendly loveable pet, then these babies are looking for you.  The little ones have been handled since they were only days old, so they are easy for even young children to hold.

To adopt a bunny, please apply today by going to our ADOPTION APPLICATION.

We’re really excited for our work day tomorrow, but the weather is being a little bit uncooperative.  The rain forecast now says that rain will be stopping between 10 and 11am, so to let everyone work in comfortable weather, we have pushed back our start time.

Our farm work days will now be from Noon to 5pm on Saturday AND Sunday.  Please join us!  Email noah@noahsarksociety.org for the address and directions.

Temperatures are cooling down, the weather keeps getting nicer, and we have taken inventory of the most important projects needed at our equine foster farm to get ready for Winter.

Next weekend, September 8th and 9th, we are asking for volunteers to roll up their sleeves, put on their boots, and come out to work.

Some of the projects will include:

  • Replacing a section of fencing that divides two pastures
  • Hanging Farm Gates
  • Painting Stall walls in the barn
  • Painting railings in the arena
  • Spreading footing in the arena
  • Removing debris (from fallen tree branches, etc)

Lunch and drinks will be provided, as well as carrots (to feed the horses).  Work days are a great way to get involved and meet the team at Noah’s Ark Society.  Please email us at www.noahsarksociety.org for directions to the farm!

Saturday: 10am to 3pm

Sunday: Noon to 5pm

We’re experiencing a different kind of flood right now at Noah’s Ark Society—a flood of puppies!  We currently have Heidi in our rescue, who is our sweet momma Australian Kelpie X (33 pounds of precious) who has her 6 newborns.  While we were working on finding a foster home for Heidi and the little one—a need we still have, 7 MORE puppies came to NAS.  These 7 we believe to be Border Collie mixes, but at 3 weeks old with no momma it is really too early to tell.

If you or someone you know may be interested in fostering a momma and babies, or you know someone looking for a puppy to add to the family, please send them to Noah’s Ark Society!  We are overwhelmed with the joy of sweet puppy breath, and kisses.

Heidi needs a foster home!

Please write us at noah@noahsarksociety.org if you would like to open your home to this sweet mom and her babies!

This foster plea isn’t really just for labradore lovers, it is for all of you who love and care for dogs.  We have 5 dogs right now needing foster homes.  All are young lab mixes from different situations.  Our first new baby is a young lab/hound mix boy.  He is approximately one year old, friendly, up to date on all his shots. He is around 30 lbs, but should be 55-60 pounds–so he has a little eating to catch up on. He was found with a collar embedded in his neck but that is taken care of. Noah’s Ark Society will provide all supplies and food for someone to take in this boy, we just need a home for him to stay for a while until he finds his forever home!

In addition to this sweet boy, who is an URGENT need, we have 4 young lab mixes, 2 black and 2 blonde who were dumped on a farm belonging to one of our volunteers.  She has been working with these 4, so they are well behaved, house trained, and just need a new place to stay until their forever homes can be found.  They do not need to stay together.  We can place them in 1 home, 2 homes, 3, or 4…whatever works for whomever is willing to foster.  Because the home they were dumped at belongs to a behaviorist they are close to on their way to canine good citizen trained, so should be a true joy to foster.
Please write us at noah@noahsarksociety.org if you can foster–even if it is just short term for a week or two!  Every little bit helps….and come out tomorrow to visit us at Paws on the Pavement in Green Hills!
